How to Transition Your Beauty Routine From Winter to Spring

How to Transition Your Beauty Routine From Winter to Spring

As the seasons change, so do the needs of our skin—and, despite what it might feel like for most of us, spring is here. So with winter slowly melting away (see what we did there??), we figured it might be helpful to put together a guide for transitioning makeup and skincare from winter to spring.

Updating your beauty routine to coincide with the season is not only fun, it's also crucial to maintaining the health of your skin. Winter’s harsh cold and super-drying indoor heating can leave your skin irritated, flaky, and sensitive. Moving into warmer weather means an increase in humidity (no matter where you live) and increase in temperature, which means those heavy moisturizers and winter-induced skin issues can be kicked to the curb.

So if you’re ready for winter to be over and transition to a new, warmer-weather routine, keep reading for our top tips on how to ring in spring the RMS way.

First Things First: Let’s Talk Skin Barrier

Spring is the perfect time to repair and rejuvenate skin that's been subjected to the harsh conditions of winter. Incorporating products with gentle exfoliating acids, such as AHAs and BHAs, can help slough off dead skin cells, revealing a brighter, more even-toned complexion. But any time you start stripping the skin, you want to make sure you're also coupling it with nourishing skincare to keep your skin happy and healthy.

Healing and repairing the skin barrier is one of the most important things you can do for your skin any time of year, but it's especially helpful when transitioning seasons.

All of RMS’s Skincare Collection is Kind-to-Biome Certified. That means our products were independently, third-party tested and confirmed to not disrupt skin’s very sensitive microbiome. Protecting the skin’s natural microbiome encourages healthier skin and a stronger skin barrier, and that can help with a lot, from lack of elasticity, loss of firmness, to regulating oil production while providing adequate hydration to dry areas.

How to Transition Your Skincare for Spring

1. Amp Up the Brightness: Vitamin C & More

With the end of winter comes the end of dry, dull skin. Incorporating more Vitamin C to help combat free radicals and improve skin tone and texture is key.

One of our favorite ingredients to do this is Kakadu Plum. Kakadu Plum has the highest concentration of Vitamin C, and because of that, products made with Kakadu are more potent, more nourishing, and more hydrating than your average Vitamin C products. Our favorites are Kakadu Beauty Oil, Kakadu Luxe Cream, and our SuperSerum Hydrating Mist.

2. Focus on Hydration vs. Moisture

Knowing the difference between hydration or hydrating products and moisture or moisturizing products can be very helpful, especially when the seasons change.

Hydration refers to water, and that can include water-based moisturizers. Hydration is key to helping alleviate dry skin, but it needs moisture to help lock it in. Moisture or moisturizing generally refers to bringing back and keeping moisture in the skin. That’s primarily done with oils. Oils are not hydrating, and water isn’t moisturizing.

It’s also important to note that oils aren’t bad—and using an oil doesn’t mean it’s going to clog your pores. In fact, many oils can help with balancing and moisturizing the skin (that’s why we made many of our products with our RMS Adaptogenic Herbal Blend, which includes nine adaptogenic herbs and organic oils to balance and nourish the skin).

3. Swap Heavier Moisturizers for Lightweight Ones

Kakadu Beauty Oil

This is a new and improved version of RMS’s original Beauty Oil—now infused with Rose-Marie’s must-have Kakadu Plum Seed Oil. “This is a pure oil with adaptogenic herbs,” Rose-Marie says. “No fillers, no binders, no crap. You'll be completely obsessed, and it will change your skin."

This potent blend is made of deeply nourishing oils to balance the skin, improve texture, prep for makeup, and deliver rich, radiant hydration. Its light-but-super-concentrated blend of oils and proprietary adaptogenic herbs delivers powerful antioxidant defense and an all-day glow.

To use, just place a few drops into your palms and press into skin. You can also do it Rose-Marie’s way, and mix a little in with UnCoverup for a tinted moisturizer all your own.

SuperSerum Hydrating Mist

There’s so much to love about our new SuperSerum Hydrating Mist, because it’s no ordinary face mist. This skin-nourishing multitasker is powered by GlowPlex™ with Niacinamide and natural peptides like Quinoa Seed Extract and Pea Extract to smooth, firm, and brighten skin tone. The Kakadu Plum Superfruit helps to plump and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, while Mineral-Infused Sea Water, Wildcrafted Buriti Oil, and our proprietary RMS Adaptogenic Herbal Blend balances the skin and provides long-lasting hydration.

"I will literally close my eyes and do a couple of soft mists over my face,” Rose-Marie says about one of her new favorite products. “And it just absorbs right away in the skin. And your makeup looks so fresh like, "Oh my God, I just did my makeup from scratch again."

Use it to revitalize makeup, but also feel free to use it to prep the skin for moisturizer or your skincare, or just to reinvigorate during the day. How you use it is up to you!

Kakadu Luxe Cream

This rich-yet-lightweight, super-indulgent cream is packed with skin-firming and skin-glowing ingredients like GlowPlex™ (a complex of Niacinamide and natural peptides including Quinoa Seed Extract and Pea Extract) and superfruit Kakadu Plum.

This luxurious, ultra-hydrating, fragrance-free face cream smooths the look of fine lines, while boosting skin’s radiance instantly and over time.

"It goes on so smooth, it's like silk,” Rose-Marie says. “You can feel a layer of moisture doing its thing on your skin without looking greasy. My skin is so soft now, I'm freaking out."

To use, just take a scoop in your finger and press into skin after cleansing and applying your serums, but before applying your Kakadu Beauty Oil.

4. Incorporate More SPF

You should always be wearing sunscreen, no matter the season. But, if you did happen to skimp on sunscreen during the darker months, now’s the time to make SPF a non-negotiable. Our SuperNatural Radiance Serum Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen is perfect for wearing underneath makeup or all on its own. It comes in three ultra-sheer shades that evens skin tone, boosts radiance and corrects imperfections with a subtle, soft-focus radiant filter and hint of tint, while non-nano zinc oxide protects from the sun’s damaging rays.

Apply liberally for a hydrating, lightweight smoothing effect that boosts radiance instantly and over time.

How to Transition Your Makeup for Spring

Transitioning skincare for spring is important, but so is transitioning your makeup. Below are some of our favorite tips.

1. Lightweight Foundations & Concealers

As the warmer months come into bloom, it’s time to ditch the heavy, full-coverage foundations in favor of lighter, dewy finishes that enhance your natural skin. We love creamy formulas that let skin shine.

SuperNatural Radiance Serum: This SPF-meets primer-meets-serum is perfect for spring. Like we mentioned above, it smooths, it moisturizes, and it promotes a healthier-looking, glowing complexion while protecting skin from harmful rays.

ReEvolve Natural Finish Foundation: Our liquid foundation is a moisturizing, buildable foundation that blends seamlessly for a dewy, natural finish. The best way to apply is by pumping just a little bit on our Skin2Skin Beauty Sponge and applying all of your face, Don’t use too much; just a pump is all you need!

UnCoverup Concealer + Kakadu Beauty Oil: This is our founder, Rose-Marie’s, go-to way to make a tinted moisturizer that works. Take a scoop of UnCoverup on the back of your hand and mix with a dropperful of Kakadu Beauty Oil for a skin-loving tint.

2. Fresh, Fun Colors

We love pastels for spring (groundbreaking, we know), and we’re also super into a more vibrant vibe that mimics what we’re seeing in our natural environment. This includes swiping on creamy eyeshadows, like our Eyelights Cream Shadow in Moondust, a starlit champagne, Sunbeam, a golden coral with a hint of peach, or Aurora, a vibrant violet. It also includes popping on brighter colors on lips and cheeks (our favorite way to do this is by using our aptly named Lip2Cheek in Smile, which is a modern, sheer coral, Beloved, a true red with just a hint of poppy, and Demure, a soft pink rose with a hint of mauve.

3. Multidimensional Blush & Highlighter

Our ReDimension Hydra Powder Blush and ReDimension Hydra Luminizer are perfect for spring, because of their sheer application and multidimensional, colorful finish. Our favorites for spring are Mai Tai, which is a sunlit coral, Bermuda Rose, a tropical, soft fuchsia, and French Rose, an innocent pink. Apply with  our Skin2Skin Powder Blush Brush, or with our Fan Brush (that’s what we suggest for the Prosecco Fizz Luminizer) for a colorful highlight.
