What Is Dry Skin?
Dry skin, also known as xerodema in scientific terms, is characterized by a lack of moisture in the outer layer of the skin (epidermis), leading to tightness, flakiness, and irritation. It's technically a medical condition, but one that can easily be treated at home. Dry skin can be caused by a variety of factors, including change in seasons, low humidity, improper skincare that doesn’t contain enough moisture-locking properties, too-hot or too-often showers, and even underlying genetic predispositions.
Dry skin can be super challenging to deal with, so when finding ways to amp up hydration for you personally, we always find it important to understand all the factors that can come into play, so you can address the specific challenges of dry skin.
The Difference Between Hydration and Moisture
Knowing the difference between hydration or hydrating products and moisture or moisturizing products can be very helpful, especially when the seasons change.
Hydration refers to water, and that can include water-based moisturizers. Hydration is key to helping alleviate dry skin, but it needs moisture to help lock it in. Moisture or moisturizing generally refers to bringing back and keeping moisture in the skin. That’s primarily done with oils. Oils are not hydrating, and water isn’t moisturizing.
It’s also important to note that oils aren’t bad—and using an oil doesn’t mean it’s going to clog your pores. In fact, many oils can help with balancing and moisturizing the skin (that’s why we made many of our products with our RMS Adaptogenic Herbal Blend, which includes nine adaptogenic herbs and organic oils to balance and nourish the skin).
Meet the SuperSerum Hydrating Mist
While the hydration from drinking water is generally different from the external hydration your skin needs, drinking plenty of water can absolutely be super beneficial for alleviating dry skin. Hydrating serums or mists can also help, because your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it, too, can absorb water and hydration.
Our new SuperSerum Hydrating Mist is a just-dropped, ultra-innovative serum-meets-mist that’s an absolute powerhouse at hydrating skin from the outside in with clean, skin-loving ingredients like:
- GlowPlex™: This is a proprietary combination complex our founder, Rose-Marie helped formulate. It’s made with:
- Niacinamide, a form of Vitamin B3 that helps tighten, tone, and reduce the effects of environmental damage.
- Natural peptides like Quinoa Seed Extract and Pea Extract, which plump the skin’s cells, reducing the look of fine lines and wrinkles and promoting a healthier complexion
- Kakadu Plum: This superfruit has the highest natural concentration and is one of the most stable forms of Vitamin C, plus contains 5x the antioxidants of a single blueberry. What makes it so magical is that it brightens better than your average Vitamin C, and, because it’s rich in polyphenols and anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial properties including Vitamin E, it does so without irritating the skin in the way traditional Vitamin C does.
- Black Currant Seed Oil: This quality oil helps improve breakouts and improves the skin barrier, which is super important for receiving and holding onto hydration.
- Wildcrafted Buriti Oil: Native to Brazil, Buriti Oil is rich in a whole host of Vitamins that offer potent antioxidant defense, and also imparts a dewy, supercharged glow. Ours is wildcrafted, so you know it’s sourced sustainably and ethically.
- Mineral-Infused Sea Water: This innovative, time-honored ingredient is rich in ocean minerals that work their nourishing and hydrating magic on the skin.
How to Use Our SuperSeurm Hydrating Mist
Because of the innovative nature of our SuperSerum Hydrating Mist, and because it’s unlike any other mist or serum on the market, we like to use it in a variety of ways to infuse glow-boosting, hydrating nourishment all day long.
#1: Spray wherever, whenever
Our founder, master makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift likes to keep our SuperSerum Hydrating Mist in her handbag as a skin refresher on the go. Because of its hydrating nature, it’s especially helpful on planes or when you know you're going to be inside for a long time (AC and heat are hydration killers!). Just close your eyes and spritz away.
#2: Prep your skincare
This mist has a ton of super skin-nourishing properties and ingredients like we mentioned above, so one of Rose-Marie's favorite ways to use it is to spray before the Kakadu Beauty Oil or Kakadu Luxe Cream for a hydrating, at-home-spa-like experience. This helps both the Kakadu Beauty Oil and the Kakadu Luxe Cream absorb even deeper into the skin’s layers, locking in hydration all day long.
#3: Enhance highlighters and luminizers
Call it clean girl aesthetic, call it no-makeup makeup—whatever it is, our favorite look is that natural, glowy, radiating from the outside in kind of vibe.
To really take it to the next level, try applying the ReEvolve Radiance Locking Primer post-skincare, and then spray a few spritzes of SuperSerum Hydrating Mist all over the face. Let it sit for a second, then apply Living Luminizer to the high points of the face, and “set” it by using our Fan Brush to sweep our ReDimension Hydra Powder Luminizer in Prosecco Fizz over the cream. Absolute glowmaker.
#4: Set your makeup
Thanks to the GlowPlex™ and its tightening properties, you can actually use our Mist to set your makeup for the day. Just go about your makeup routine as you normally would, then spray from about a foot away from your face to set.
Other Ways to Increase Skin Hydration
- Kakadu Luxe Cream is a new product included in our just-dropped skincare collection. It’s powered by skin-firming GlowPlex™ (a complex of Niacinamide and natural peptides including Quinoa Seed Extract and Pea Extract) and superfruit Kakadu Plum, for a luxurious, ultra-hydrating, fragrance-free face cream that smooths the look of fine lines and boosts skin’s radiance instantly and over time.
-
Drink more water with electrolytes: It sounds cliche, but it’s true. Our skin is our body’s largest organ, and when we’re not drinking enough water and staying hydrated, our skin gets the brunt of it.
To prevent dry skin we like to keep a water bottle with a little bit of salt and lime squeezed in (electrolytes!) at our desks so we don’t have to think about it.
-
Use a humidifier: Even in the spring, drier environments can wreak havoc on the skin. We suggest getting one that’s simple and easy to clean to prevent acne, blemishes, dry skin, and more, and to prevent that “tight” feeling when waking up.
- Layer Your Skincare: The order in which you layer your skincare actually does matter! It’s important to always go from lightest, and water-based, to heaviest, and oil-based. That’s because your skin naturally absorbs water, and when you have a water-based layer on and then an oil-based layer on top of that, your skin will absorb both more easily. A good rule of thumb is to always go: serum, lotion, oil.
