Trinny London vs. RMS Beauty: Key Differences

Trinny London vs. RMS Beauty: Key Differences

The manufacture of color cosmetics is a multi-billion dollar global industry that includes products you find at your local drugstore, department store brands, and web-based beauty companies. It goes without saying: there are thousands of companies competing for a spot on your face.

What actually makes us choose the products we do is the secret every marketing executive sets out to uncover. Today, many of us are more likely to choose a color cosmetic product based on its social media marketing and luxe packaging rather than the quality of its ingredients.

Advertising execs know this, and they encourage companies to get their products into the hands of the influencers with the highest following. When they do, boom: their product becomes a cult favorite, whether or not it’s actually a quality product.

It’s normal to find ourselves a little burned out with social media “hype,” especially if we’ve purchased products and been a little underwhelmed with their performance.

At RMS Beauty, you’ll find we’ve politely excused ourselves from the popularity contest to focus on creating color cosmetics that are as good for your skin and body as they are beautifying.

Here, we’ll look at a few of the differences between up-and-coming UK-based brand Trinny London, and RMS Beauty.

Who They Are

Every brand has a story, and Trinny London’s begins with Trinny Woodall, a popular British television host and author. A Jane-of-all-trades, Trinny began her career in 1994, writing a fashion column for The Daily Telegraph. The popularity of the column grew, and her career morphed into television appearances and hosting regular fashion and beauty segments on morning shows.

Like Trinny, RMS Beauty was founded by a successful, forward-thinking woman. Rose-Marie Swift worked for over three decades as a makeup artist for celebrities, models, and magazines. In 2005, in response to personal health issues, she began to detox her life and began mixing her own, non-toxic, nourishing cosmetics.

Her homemade cosmetics were so popular with her clients that she launched RMS Beauty in 2009, offering her expertise and living makeup to the public.

Purpose

Each company begins with a purpose that guides their brand decisions and helps dictate the direction of their products. While you might think that the sole purpose of a color cosmetics company would be to offer beauty products, the mission statement is usually more complex.

Trinny London

Trinny London was founded in 2017 by Trinny Woodall to give every individual the confidence to be their best selves. Their line of cream-based cosmetics focuses on ease of use, easy color profiling (supposedly under five minutes to get a perfect match), and clickable pots of product that lock together to “declutter” your makeup bag.

RMS Beauty

Founded in 2009 by Rose-Marie Swift, our line of color cosmetics and skincare focuses on living ingredients, many of which are food-grade quality. RMS Beauty combines the decades of Rose-Marie’s experience as a makeup artist with her knowledge of the cleanest ingredients on Earth to give everyone access to safe, nourishing, sustainable cosmetics.

Ingredients

A product is only as good as what’s inside. Anything you place on your skin and lips has the potential to penetrate your pores and get inside your body. This is why ingredients are so important. Ask yourself, are the ingredients in your lipstick safe for you to eat?

RMS Beauty

Our color cosmetics have literally set the standard for clean beauty. As the forerunner of clean cosmetics, you simply won’t find a stricter ingredient standard. We are as intentional about what we keep out of our cosmetics as what we keep in.

Our products are all:

  • Cruelty-free
  • Gluten-free (excluding mascara)
  • Synthetic fragrance-free
  • GMO-free
  • Paraben-free
  • Nanoparticle-free
  • Sulfate-free
  • Phthalate-free
  • Talc-free

Instead of using inexpensive, synthetic alternatives in our products, we use pure, raw, living ingredients that are as close to their natural state as possible.

For instance, many companies use coconut oil in their products. However, the coconut oil they use has typically been heated and refined so much that the natural antioxidants and nourishing ingredients have been completely eliminated.

  • RMS Beauty Coconut Oil. We use raw, unrefined coconut oil that is cold-centrifuged. This preserves the coconut oil in its most natural state, allowing your skin to soak up all of the antifungal, antioxidant, moisturizing properties that real coconut oil has to offer.
  • Wildcrafted oils. We also formulate our products with wildcrafted oils, like buriti. Buriti oil is hydrating, packed with antioxidants, and supports collagen and elastin production. Our buriti oil is sourced from hand-harvested moriche palm trees in Brazil and extracted carefully to preserve the integrity of the oil in our products.
  • RMS Adaptogenic Herbal Blend. Many of our products contain our adaptogenic herbal blend, a blend of nine herbs hand-selected by Rose-Marie based on their ability to work synergistically with the skin to keep it radiant. Our blend includes golden jojoba, St. John’s Wort, marigold, horsetail, turmeric, olive leaf, sarsaparilla, ashwagandha, and licorice root.

At RMS Beauty, ingredients matter, and you’ll never have to wonder if a product we carry is safe for use.

Trinny London

While we couldn’t locate a specific ingredients standards statement, they do maintain a cruelty-free, zero animal testing policy. Ingredients are less of a focus to Trinny, and we found that several of their ingredients were outside of RMS Beauty’s standards.

  • Carmine. Trinny’s Eye2Eye eye color products contain the ingredient carmine. This ingredient is made from the crushed shells of the cochineal beetle. Each year, thousands of beetles are farmed and harvested for the color of their shells.
    • Animal collagen and elastin. Found in Trinny’s Miracle Blur product, this ingredient is harvested from the skin of fish. Miracle Blur also includes parabens.
      • Parabens. Parabens are typically added to products as preservatives, i.e. to extend their shelf life. The problem with parabens is their potential toxicity to the body. Parabens are suspected as carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and can present reproductive and developmental toxicity concerns.
  • C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate. The first ingredient in Trinny’s Lip2Cheek lip and cheek stain is C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, a synthetic emollient. EWG’s Skin Deep Website expresses concern for this ingredient as an environmental toxin as well as a possible skin and eye irritant.

RMS Beauty offers a Lip2Cheek product as well. The first ingredient? Pure, raw, cold-centrifuged coconut oil.

While both Trinny London and RMS Beauty focus on cosmetics that are cream-based and ultra-hydrating, there is a huge difference between each line’s ingredients.

Focus

Every makeup company has a focus. While some companies exist to create products that completely cover natural skin and offer a dramatic, exaggerated look, other brands work to help accentuate natural beauty and create healthy skin with symbiotic ingredients.

RMS Beauty

Our focus has always been natural, living skin. Instead of creating a flawless finish that looks artificial, “done-up,” or airbrushed, our goal is to allow you to be a glowing version of your natural self.

Two of our most popular products, our Luminizer and “Un” Cover-Up, contain hydrating, nourishing ingredients that help elevate your skin’s health and radiance from the inside out. Both products offer color and correction, but without forming layers of cake-like color with powdery, dry finishes.

Our products keep your skin healthy, radiant, and effortlessly beautiful without the use of harsh chemical ingredients or toxins.

Trinny London

Trinny’s focus is making makeup easy to use, quick, and portable. Ingredients aren’t really Trinny’s focus, but instead streamlining your skincare and makeup routine.

Trinny’s approach to beauty also focuses on keeping skin looking fresh and natural, but their choice of ingredients may not be best suited for individuals who want to use the most natural, cleanest ingredients on their skin.

What’s Best For You

We all have a choice in terms of skincare and cosmetics, and the responsibility to do the research and determine what’s best for our skin is on us.

With RMS Beauty, you can stop Googling. Our products simply don’t contain harmful ingredients — what they do contain are ingredients that keep your skin healthy and radiant, naturally.

Our mission is never to pit one brand against another; all brands serve a purpose and fill a market need. However, the purity of our ingredients, the industry-leading standards we adhere to, and our products’ remarkable ability to transform your skin, set us apart.

This year, make a resolution to be kind to your skin and your body, and reclaim your skin’s beauty from within. RMS Beauty does for your skin what a week in Bali does for your soul. Get glowing!
