Get Your Best Brows with Rose-Marie’s Ultimate Brow Hack
When we’re talking about beauty, we always hear about the eyes. Line just the top to open them up, add a bit of highlighter to the corners for a pop, use color theory to amp up your eye color. But what about the eyebrows? While the eyebrows are decidedly not the windows into the soul (that would just be…strange), they certainly are wildly crucial for the face. They’re by far one of our most defining features, framing our eyes and balancing the face.
They’re so important, in fact, that Rose-Marie Swift, our master makeup artist and founder of RMS Beauty has created an entire kit called the Ultimate Brow Kit, designed to help you get your must-have, perfect-for-you brows every single time. (Her eyebrow tricks are so popular, they've even garnered thousands of views on Instagram and TikTok.)
And look, we get it. Achieving the perfect eyebrows can seem daunting, but with the right knowledge and tools, anyone can master it. And we’re here to walk you through it.
Understanding Your Natural Eyebrow Shape
Before you can achieve your ideal eyebrows, it’s essential to understand your natural shape. Each face is unique, and the perfect eyebrow compliments your facial features.
“Eyebrows are so important because they completely frame the face,” Rose-Marie says. “And once you know the tricks of the trade, you’ll get them done right every time.
Here’s how you can determine your natural eyebrow shape:
Identify Your Arch:
Look in the mirror and find the highest point of your eyebrow. This is your arch. Your arch should align with the outer edge of your iris.
Measure Your Start Point:
Your eyebrow should start directly above the inner corner of your eye. Use a straight object, like a pencil, to measure from the outer edge of your nostril straight up to your brow.
Determine the End Point:
To find where your eyebrow should end, angle the pencil from the outer edge of your nostril to the outer corner of your eye. The point where the pencil intersects your brow is where your eyebrow should naturally end.
4 Steps to Getting Your Best Eyebrows
Now that you’ve got a handle on the natural shape of your eyebrows, it’s time to get down to styling. Below are Rose-Marie’s master tips and tricks.
1. Fill In, Don’t Draw
“A lot of women can make the mistake of drawing their brows on in a singular line,” Rose-Marie says. This technique can often result in an unnatural and harsh appearance. Instead, Rose-Marie advises using short, small strokes with a pencil and powder to fill in sparse areas. This method mimics the natural texture of eyebrow hair, giving you a more realistic and softer look. “With my Pencil and Powder, you want to use short, small strokes to fill in sparse or no hairs, accentuating where the brow is or would be.”
How to Do It:
Step 1: Choose an eyebrow pencil (like our Back2Brow Pencil) and powder (like our Back2Brow Powder) that matches your natural brow color. If you have gray eyebrows, Rose-Marie always suggests going back to what your natural color was. Our three shades are Light, Medium, and Dark.
Step 2: Using the pencil, create small, hair-like strokes in the sparse areas of your brows.
Step 3: Apply the powder with a brush to set the pencil strokes and add depth.
Step 5: Blend the product with a spoolie brush to ensure a natural finish.
By filling in your brows instead of drawing them, you can achieve a fuller, more defined look that enhances your facial features without overpowering them.
2. Get a Brush That’s Your Friend
The right tools are crucial for achieving perfect brows, and the brush you use can make all the difference.
“I designed this brush that’s in your kit because I couldn’t find one that I liked that didn’t give you an automatic squared off brow,” Rose-Marie says of the Back2Brow Brush in her Ultimate Brow Kit. “I wanted it to be shorter, stockier, firmer & slightly rounder on the sides. With this brush, you couldn’t get a squared off brow if you tried; and that’s a good thing!” This brush helps prevent that, which can look unnatural and harsh.
Benefits of the Back2Brow Brush:
Control: The shorter and firmer bristles offer better control, allowing for precise application.
Natural Shape: The rounder sides ensure a softer, more natural brow shape.
Versatility: Suitable for both powder and cream products, making it a versatile tool in your makeup kit.
How to Use It:
Step 1: Dip the brush into your Back2Brow Powder.
Step 2: Apply the product using short, light strokes, following the natural direction of your brow hairs.
Step 3: Focus on the areas that need more coverage or definition.
Step 4: Use the spoolie end of the brush to blend the product and soften any harsh lines.
With our founder-designed brush, achieving well-defined, natural-looking brows is easier than ever.
3. Focus on the Arch
The placement of darkness or “heaviness” of your eyebrows can significantly impact your overall look. Rose-Marie is all about focusing on the arch of your brows rather than the front.
“Try not to make the front of your brow too dark,” Rose-Marie says. “When the front is heavy, it pulls the eyes together, makes you look stern and it doesn’t photograph as well.”
Plus, darkening the front of your brows can make your eyes appear closer together and give a stern expression. Instead, highlighting the arch can lift your face and create a more youthful, open look. “I’d rather you make your arch darker to lift the face.”
How to Achieve the Perfect Arch:
Step 1: Start by filling in the tail of your eyebrow using small strokes.
Step 2: Gradually add more product as you move towards the arch.
Step 3: Keep the front of your brow lighter by using less product and blending well.
Step 4: Use a highlighter or light concealer just below the arch to enhance the lifted effect.
By focusing on the arch and keeping the front lighter, you can create a balanced, flattering brow shape that enhances your natural beauty.
4. Darker Brows Make an Impact
“I like to do a darker brow on myself and the models I work with,” Rose-Marie says. “It always brings contrast back into the face, no matter your skin tone. And contrast just makes it all look magical.” Dark eyebrows can create a bolder and more natural look, and that brings definition and depth to your face.
And if you’ve got gray eyebrows? Like we mentioned above, no problem. Just go with what your brow color was before.
Steps to Achieve Darker Brows:
Step 1: Choose a brow product that is one or two shades darker than your natural brow color, especially if your natural color is light.
Step 2: Apply the product using short, precise strokes to avoid a blocky appearance.
Step 3: Focus on defining the tail and arch of your brows, as these areas benefit most from the added contrast.
Step 4: Blend well with a spoolie brush to ensure the darker shade looks natural and seamless.
Tips for Different Skin Tones:
Fair Skin: Opt for a soft brown or taupe shade to avoid a stark contrast. This is the Light Back2Brow Powder shade.
Medium or Olive Skin: Medium to dark brown shades work well to create a balanced look. This is the Medium Back2Brow Powder shade.
Dark Skin: Deep brown or black shades can add definition without overpowering your features. This is the Dark Back2Brow Powder shade.
Having a darker, bolder brow can enhance your facial structure and bring out your eyes, making your overall look even more impactful.
